Canoe Trip

09/14/2013 – 09/15/2015

This fall, there were 13 scouts and 5 adult volunteers that attended this trip. This list includes Eoghan Casey, John Clay, Ian Dunkleburger, Aleks Fever, Quentin Hill, Brent Landquist, Josh Liberty, Max Nakashima, Jeff Rosen, Nick Rosen, Marcus Rowland, Joe Suzedell, Mr. Ackley, Mr. Hill, Mr. Hillman, Mr. Nakashima, and Rue Wilson. We met at the locker the previous meeting to plan tenting arrangements, meals, etc. We met at the locker Saturday morning to load gear. After a short drive to the boat ramp by the Taunton River, scouts played football to pass the time. Unfortunately, during the game, Marcus broke a bone in his lower leg and had to leave. As of our last meeting, he is well on his way to recovery. The waters were calm, and we arrived at the site just hours later after stopping for lunch. Though we had periods of clouds, we were fortunate to have no rain. Most scouts slept well, and the next morning we packed, took down our tents, and made a delicious breakfast, and soon left for the scout locker. Most scouts enjoyed the trip.

Camp Squanto

07/21/2013 – 07/27/2013

This year there were 21 scouts from Troop 28 that attended camp as well as some adult volunteers. These scouts included Zander Arnold, George Bryan, Eoghan Casey, John Clay, T.J. Coffey, Joe Donoghue, Gavin Dunkelburger, Ian Dunkelburger, Sam Franklin, Liam Geyer, Brodie Jackish, Brent Landquist, Josh Liberty, Sully Mulhern, Tyler Mulhern, Luke O’Brien, Tommy Olson, Kevin Perrone, Jeff Rosen, Marcus Rowland, Joe Suzedell, and Amby Tierney.

There was a Pre-Camp meeting at Mr. Hillman’s house on July 8th. Here we turned in our medical forms, signed up for merit badges, and purchased new class B T-shirts. Then on July 18, scouts worked on the gateway for this year’s theme night (sports) at Mr. Hill’s house.

On Sunday, July 21, we met at camp at 12:45pm. Sam, Josh, and Jeff did Flight to Eagle, and most of the Spartan patrol did environmental science and swimming merit badges. We all enjoyed the great opening and closing campfire skits this year. Some days were rainy, some cold but we still had a good week.

National Jamboree

07/13/2013 – 07/25/2013

The first day, scouts depart McDonald’s in Hanover for George Mason University in Virginia, and toured Washington D.C. at night. They visited many war memorials and the Lincoln Memorial. The next day they continued to tour D.C. visiting Arlington National Cemetery and the Smithsonian museums. They continued on their long journey to the Jamboree. They arrived the next day. When they arrived a “creepy” guy explained the risks and hazards of the Jamboree. They set up camp after waiting on the bus for a very long time. (Old Colony Council had the patch theme of ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’.) There were presentations at “the arena.” There were even celebrities at the Jamboree including Mike Rowe (from Dirty Jobs, and Ford commercials), Three Doors Down (a rock music group), and Carl XVI Gustaf (King of Sweeden). Throughout the trip, scouts could participate in high-adventure activities and merit badges. While they were there, everybody received food in boxes to bring to the campsite. At one point in the trip, scouts participated in a service project to benefit the community. C413’s service project was to go to a small town (near Beckley, WV) to scrape a fence and paint another. Afterwards they got ice cream. On the final night, there was huge fireworks display and C413 had its own popcorn. After the fireworks were over, many people sang the West Virginia folk tune ‘Country Roads.’ When they left the next day, they stopped by Hershey Park for two hours to go on rides at night. The following day, they could go again. Scouts headed back off to Hanover and “secretly” got off the bus to march and sing the song ‘Follow Me, Boys’ from the Disney movie of the same name. Everybody thought it was one of their best trips ever!
